Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Wyoming Receives $10,000 for “Amachi”
Worland, WY – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Wyoming (BBBS of NW WY) has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Kresge Unrestricted Endowment Fund held by the Wyoming Community Foundation (WYCF) to organize a BBBS Amachi program. BBBS Amachi is a program that matches church congregants with children whose parents have been convicted of any crime resulting in a time in jail. Even though we like to admonish “Do as I say, not as I do,” research presented by the US Senate indicated that with out intervention 70% of these children will also suffer convictions. Through partnerships with community minded citizens, this initiative aspires to break the cycle of incarceration. BBBS of NW WY is a nonprofit organization providing children in Park, Big Horn, Washakie, Hot Springs and Fremont counties with professionally supported one-to-one mentoring. Caring adult mentors (Bigs) interact with mentees (Littles) to provide opportunities for Littles to gain new skills and interests and to expand their experiences in a supportive and encouraging relationship. Bigs do not try to take the role of parent or teacher, but act as an additional role model in a child’s life. The WYCF grant will be used to establish the partnerships and referral networks necessary to serving these children. The Wyoming Community Foundation is a charitable organization that builds and preserves funds established by individuals, families, corporations, agencies, and private foundations. The Community Foundation uses the earnings from these funds to benefit community needs across the state of Wyoming. For information call 307-721-8300 or visit their website at www.wycf.org . |
